The Design Element The Property Brothers Use To Add Personality To A Bathroom

Aug 08, 2023

Combining and arranging design elements is a skill that, when done well, leaves a lasting impression on whoever enters your space. They typically involve line, shape, color, texture, or form and contribute to a room's overall aesthetic and balance. On elevating a bathroom, the Property Brothers have been known to use statement mirrors to add style and personality. In one bathroom, the pair installed an oversized glam gold mirror to play perfectly off a gold leaf bathtub. And in another bathroom redesign, the two used a set of mirrors with curvy black frames. The shape thoughtfully blends with the geometric floor tile and adds a modern touch to the Mediterranean-inspired space.

Using mirrors strategically can be a great way to add style to a bathroom because they don't only serve a functional purpose but can also be decorative elements that enhance the decor and ambiance. You can do this by bringing in pairs or groups, choosing unique shapes and frames, or hanging them to reflect a good window view. Playing with their placement, adding lighting, and combining them with other decorative elements are some other techniques to consider.

Instead of the traditional rectangular or oval mirrors, consider opting for mirrors with interesting shapes like round, hexagonal, or even irregular shapes to create a more eye-catching focal point. Vintage or antique mirrors will also bring a lot of character to your bathroom as they usually have interesting frames. If you want to make a unique statement, consider covering a large portion of a wall with mirrors to make the space look more modern and feel much bigger than it is.

Another way to "mirror" Jonathan and Drew Scott's use of this essential bathroom fixture is to create an appealing arrangement by grouping them together. You can use an identical pair, or mix and match some smaller ones together on one wall. Experiment with different shapes and sizes to form an artistic and visually striking display. The Scotts even have a line of mirrors that they've designed for The Home Depot. They come in both oval-shaped and hexagon-shaped sets that are ideal for adding geometric flair to a monotonous bathroom.

The frame or method you choose to hang the mirror can also make a statement. On a Today Show appearance, the Scott brothers demonstrated how a simple frame of molding can refresh a plain mirror. "In the bathroom, a lot of people have a big mirror. But the mirror itself isn't in bad shape, it's just dull. We suggest people frame it out," Jonathan said. You can then add a subtle shade or paint the frame a bold hue to make a statement. Adding some unique hanging materials like twine or rope can also add an artistic touch.

Another option is to incorporate other decor elements like plants, artwork, or shelving. Think hanging or creeping plants around or over the mirror, potted plants on floating shelves around the mirror, or just potted plants placed on the counter. These combinations will accentuate the mirror and add life and texture to the bathroom as a whole.

When it comes to lighting, flanking sconces can play well off mirrors. You can also use backlit mirrors on your vanity to add a touch of modern elegance and create a mood. Some have LED lights that change colors, giving you flexibility on how you want the bathroom to feel at any given time. You can also get vanity mirrors with lights that are specific for doing makeup and getting ready.
